How to export a chat

Every WhatsApp chat has an export button. It takes about 20 seconds.

On iPhone

  1. Open the group in WhatsApp.
  2. Tap the group name at the top.
  3. Scroll down and tap Export chat.
  4. Choose Without media.
  5. Tap Save to Files, then pick that file here. No need to unzip it.

Questions

Why not just connect my WhatsApp?

WhatsApp doesn't let other apps read your chats. Tools that try it break WhatsApp's rules, can get your account banned, and need your messages on their servers. An export stays on your phone. That's the point.

Does anyone else see my chat?

No. Not us, not your friends. Only the cards you choose to post ever leave your phone.

Does it work with one-to-one chats?

Yes, any chat works. The awards shine with three people or more.

Which year does it cover?

The year of your latest messages. WhatsApp caps exports at about 40,000 messages, so in very busy groups the recap may start later in the year. It tells you when it does.

Does it work in my language?

It reads exports from iPhone and Android, whatever the language of your phone. The site speaks English for now. French, Spanish and Portuguese are coming.
